I bought my first share of stock in 1965. I had no idea what I was doing. Fortunately, this event began a journey of more than two decades being employed as a financial services professional, which permitted me to become conversant with how financial markets work. As a self-directed investor, I applied my job skills and experience to my modest investment activities. I learned from my mistakes and spent a considerable amount of time and effort on self-education.
Since the late 1980s, after some thirty years in banking, investment finance, and foreign development assistance work, I’ve focused my professional attention – writing, teaching, and advising – on the participation of the individual investor in the investment process. Thus, the investing know-how provided by my “Investment Education Tutorials” is the product of many years of my endeavors as an investor and investment professional.
The tutorials are aimed at helping individual investors improve their investing know-how. This guidance is intended to be unbiased, easy-to-understand, and timely. Simply stated, whether you’re a do-it-yourself investor or one who uses a financial professional, you need to know what you own and why you own it in order to make smart investment decisions.
